How I GO Further
On July 31st, I will be running the San Francisco Half Marathon. This is my first race to date and although it has always been a personal goal of mine to complete a Half Marathon, I have chosen to run on behalf of one of the most-noblest of causes, which I wanted to share with you.
Farms for the Future – Uganda
There is a model development farm in Masaka, Uganda that teaches other farmers and communities how to bring lasting food security to their homes, businesses and organizations. The model farm is used both as a training center and a community center for all program participants and gives farmers the skills they need to get out of poverty PERMANENTLY.
In an effort to build 50 beehives that will help 15 farmers to grow honey and get out of poverty forever, I happen to be part of an ambitious campaign to raise $2,000 to do just that. Even more ambitious: I plan to raise the money in four weeks!
I obviously need your help. Your contribution, big or small, will bring me closer to my goal. Now, I know the tendency is to think "out of sight, out of mind." This is why you can see the photos of the model farm and community in Uganda that will benefit from the beehives. $120 builds 3 beehives for 1 farmer to grow honey. Those beehives will then produce enough honey to make the farmer $600 per year. Put another way, every $1 you donate makes nearly $6 of profit on the ground.
The other tendency is to ask, "Where is my money really going?" The non-profit behind the "Farms for the Future" project is called Groundwork Opportunities (GO for short), and it was co-founded by my closest of friends who have dedicated their lives to using grassroots fundraising to effect global change.
Their philosophy is simple: Anyone can make a difference and 100% of donations GO directly to cause. Please help me change the world by just clicking on the donate button above! Remember to check with any matching policies your company may have to double your impact!
Thank you and remember:
Kindness is contagious.
Spread the word.
With my sincerest gratitude,
Heather
about my project
Building Farms in Uganda
Food security is lacking throughout the developing world. Their idea? Start a model development farm where you train rural farmers modern agriculture techniques. Then form farmer cooperatives to scale their businesses.
Since 2005, GO has partnered with The Uganda Rural Community Support Foundation, URCSF, in Masaka, Uganda to leverage local skill sets by training subsistence farmers in traditional and sustainable farming methods at a model farming cooperative. The model farm is used both as a training center and a community center for all program participants.
