Project Details
Education is a basic human right that no child should be denied. The It Takes a Community project began with the construction of a school for children living in 7 rural townships outside of Moshi, Tanzania. Together with Mama Hope and The Tanzanian Children Concern (TCC), Groundwork Opportunities helped fund the St. Timothy's School to ensure that the children of Newland and the seven surrounding townships have a proper place to live, learn, and grow.
TCC is a locally run organization embedded in their region of Moshi and was founded in 2003 by James Nathaniel and Beatrice Elias, two teachers who recognized the dire need for education programs and health care services in the region. Since the school opened, the impact on the community has been massive, providing more than 300 children a solid education every year and creating 36 permanent jobs. TCC estimates that
almost $14,000 in annual salaries will assist over 200 community members with improving their standard of living.
In addition, we are also proud to partner with the One Person Project to ensure that the children receive the highest quality textbooks and school materials that allow them to excel in their education. This project works to send massive annual shipments of books and educational materials collected by a wonderful network of community support from British Columbia.
The project is now expanding to provide a lasting clean water solution for this region. With local partners who understand the needs of their communities and a vast network of international support, the future for the communities of Moshi looks bright indeed.

Ibrah's Story
Ibrahim (Ibrah) Mkwizu comes from a poor family of 10 and was the only member of his family to receive a University education. After a long history of working with various volunteers and educational groups who visited Tanzania to conduct humanitarian work, research, and tourism, Ibrah opened a volunteer home base which could house tourists who wished to do something more for the community while enjoying their adventures in Tanzania. He started with only one bed, one room and one volunteer in 2009.
Since this project began, GO has been proud to partner with Ibrah as our exclusive local ambassador to Tanzania, helping our volunteers not only receive a wonderful place to stay during their visit, but also helping them plan their climbs of Kilimanjaro, safari excursions, and many other adventures. With the ever growing number of GO volunteers visiting Moshi, Ibrahim's business now has a house with 5 rooms capable of housing 16 people at a time. Ibrahim's story shows the ripple effect of sustainable community development as the success of our project has helped his business grow, which in turn supports not only his family but also the community around him.
