With a growing number of rural poor relying on subsistence agriculture in Uganda, this project will look to using traditional farming methods and techniques as a remedy to poverty. Specifically, this project will organize farming communities into cooperatives and encourage traditional farming methods and techniques with regard to planting, harvesting, animal husbandry, grain milling, and marketing successful crop yields. Farmers in the community will undergo training sessions on subjects ranging from genetically modified seeds to harvesting in drought seasons to organic farming, and will contribute their skills to a large communally owned local farm. Once they have demonstrated their skill and initiative by working on the large farm, they will be granted packs of seeds to begin cultivating individual farms on their own property. Preference will be given to those farmers who are living in extreme poverty and who have shown dedication and support in farming activities within their community. Farmers will also conduct training sessions for local students on weekends to introduce the merits of farming and prevent children from moving into the slums or ignoring familial obligations. This project is fully self-sustainable, with farmers providing seeds to each other, using composted crop as animal food, as well as collecting and harvesting rainwater and spring water. By incorporating modern education and training techniques with traditional farming methods, this project will seek to bring Uganda's poorest class of rural subsistence farmer our of poverty and into a better life. |
