Community-based micro-development.
While micro-finance seeks to improve the lives of individuals, through loans and other financial services, micro-development aims to improve the system in which these individuals live. Our micro-development solutions address the structural deficiencies in health care, education, human rights, and agriculture, that often lead to extreme poverty. By shifting our focus outward, from the individual to the surrounding community, we are able to affect change on a larger scale and to promote a sense of collective ownership for the development process. Our grassroots micro-development approach also avoids bureaucratic inefficiencies and promotes local entrepreneurism.
long-term sustainability.
Our approach to micro-development aims to select and promote projects that are self-sustaining, not projects that provide band-aid solutions. In many cases this sustainability is obvious: using crops to feed livestock and livestock to fertilize crops. But sustainability can also come from engaging the community and from encouraging participation in the development process. By promoting community ownership, from project conception to realization, we are generating vested interests in project success and perpetuation long after our volunteers leave. Not only is this success contagious, it is also sustainable.
100% transparency.
When we first started GO, one of our core goals was to renew people’s faith in charity by eliminating wasteful spending and holding ourselves accountable for every penny of donated funds. One of the ways we do this is by pledging 100% of personal donations directly to the cause. Another is by offering full transparency to our supporters. local involvement.
Not only do we support local organizations in-country, but we also support in-country organizations locally. So even if you can't travel across the world to help, there is plenty you can do in your own backyard. The idea is that by acting locally we can affect change globally. Whether this means starting a compost pile to help the environment, promoting activism in your local community, or improving your health by participating in a race, your benevolence will be contagious. View change as a mindset and not an outcome.
